Checking what warm-light modes really do
Orange is where blue-reduction features do their most visible work, because it already sits at the warm end of the spectrum and has a moderate blue component to remove. Load this field, then toggle Night Shift, Night Light or your phone equivalent, and watch how far the colour moves. It is a quicker and more legible check than staring at a white field, and it tells you both whether the feature is active and roughly how aggressive its setting is.
Judging colour temperature presets
Most monitors ship with warm, normal and cool presets in the on-screen menu, and the difference between them is often hard to judge on a desktop full of mixed content. A single warm field makes the comparison direct: step through the presets with this page open and the shifts are obvious. It is also a fair way to check whether a cool preset is pushing your display so far that warm tones lose their character entirely.
A mixed tone, not a primary
Unlike red, green and blue, orange asks all three sub-pixels to do different amounts of work, with red at full, green at roughly two thirds and blue at zero. That makes it a poor field for isolating a single sub-pixel failure and a good field for judging how smoothly your display handles intermediate values. If an orange field looks blotchy or steps visibly across the screen, that points at how the panel is handling mid-range levels rather than at a dead pixel.
Ambient light and warmth
A dim orange full screen makes a tolerable ambient light for a dark room, warmer and less alerting than a white field at the same brightness. It is also a practical backdrop for checking how much a room lamp is skewing your perception of the screen: if your display looks neutral under warm household lighting and blue under daylight, your eyes are adapting, and that affects every colour judgement you make.

- A field that should be flat showing patches or steps suggests the panel is handling mid-range values unevenly. Confirm it on the grey field and the greyscale ramp before drawing conclusions.
- A cast that varies across the panel
- One side of the field looking noticeably cooler or warmer than the other is a uniformity characteristic. Common at the edges of large panels and usually only worth acting on when it is severe.
What to do next
If something looks wrong, check it again in a normally lit room and from straight on, then check whether it appears on a second device. If it only happens on this screen and you are still inside the return window, that is the time to contact the retailer.
Questions people actually ask
Why use orange instead of white to check Night Shift?
Because the shift is easier to see. A warm-light feature removes blue, and orange already has little blue in it, so the change between the feature being on and off reads as a clear move in hue rather than a subtle change in the tone of a white field.
Can an orange screen find dead pixels?
Not well. Orange lights red fully, green partially and blue not at all, so a failed element changes the local colour rather than producing a clean black dot. Use the primaries and a white field for pixel hunting.
My screen has an orange tint I cannot get rid of. What now?
Work through the obvious causes in order: warm-light features, the display colour profile, the monitor colour temperature preset, and then the cable and input. If it persists across profiles and devices, the panel itself has drifted, which is common on older laptops.
